Clear boundaries

What we do, and what we don't.

Being clear about this protects you and the estate. We are an advisor to the executor, not a law firm, an accounting firm or a trust company.

Reconciled will

  • Explain, in general terms, the usual steps in settling an estate on PEI
  • Help you gather, sort and catalogue papers and records
  • Build and keep a record of assets, debts, accounts and contacts from information you provide
  • Keep a checklist and schedule of tasks, deadlines and follow-ups
  • Identify organizations that may need notice and what they usually ask for
  • Keep a log of calls and correspondence
  • Organize documents for your lawyer, accountant or financial advisor

Reconciled will not

  • Give legal advice, interpret a will or advise on anyone's legal rights
  • Draft wills, powers of attorney, trust documents or probate applications
  • Prepare or file court documents, or represent you anywhere
  • Act as executor or trustee, or hold, invest or distribute estate money or property
  • Prepare tax returns or give tax, accounting or investment advice
  • Make decisions for you. Decisions and signatures stay yours.

Reconciled works best for estates that are solvent and not in dispute. If family members disagree about the will or the estate can't cover its debts, we'll recommend you speak with a lawyer first.

Questions

Common questions

Are you a lawyer?

No. Reconciled is not a law firm and doesn't give legal advice. We help you understand the general process and stay organized, and we'll tell you when a question needs a lawyer.

Do I still need a lawyer?

Often, yes, especially if probate is needed or anything about the estate is complicated. We can help you prepare for those meetings, so your lawyer's time is spent on legal work rather than sorting papers.

Will you be the executor?

No. You remain the executor, and every decision and signature is yours. We work alongside you as an advisor.

How do you charge?

By fixed package, agreed in writing before work begins. We never charge a percentage of the estate.

How is my information kept?

We collect only what's needed, never ask for passwords, and keep documents in encrypted storage shared only with people you approve. See our privacy page.

Do you only work on PEI?

Yes, for now. If the estate has property or accounts elsewhere in Canada, we can still help you keep track of them.

A first conversation

Tell us where things stand.

A free, no-obligation call to talk through the estate, what has been done so far, and whether Reconciled is the right fit.
